Azure Data Factory ETL Testing and Databricks Testing: A Practical Guide

Azure is one of the most common cloud platforms on Indian IT service projects, and many ETL testing job descriptions now mention Azure Data Factory (ADF) and Databricks. The good news: the testing principles are the same as classic ETL testing. This guide shows what changes on Azure and gives SQL and PySpark checks you can reuse.

Note
Our course teaches ETL testing fundamentals, SQL-style validation and Python. It does not teach Azure Data Factory or Databricks; this free guide covers the platform-specific part.

Why Azure Data Factory and Databricks Testing Matters

ADF orchestrates and moves data (copy activities, data flows, pipelines with triggers). Databricks runs Spark transformations, often writing Delta tables in a medallion layout: bronze (raw), silver (cleaned), gold (business-ready). Defects can happen at every hop, so testers validate each layer.

Testing Azure Data Factory Pipelines

What to testHow
Pipeline runs end to endDebug run or triggered run; check status in the Monitor tab
Copy activity completenessCompare rowsRead and rowsCopied in the activity output, and check skipped rows if fault tolerance is on
Parameters and dynamic contentRun with different dates, file names and environments
Incremental loadsWatermark updated; re-run does not duplicate data
Error handlingFailure paths, retries and alerts work; bad files go to the error folder
Data in the targetSQL validation on the sink, the same as classic ETL testing

ADF Validation Checks in SQL

SQL
-- Run on Azure SQL / Synapse after the pipeline
-- 1. Rows loaded for the run date vs source extract count
SELECT COUNT(*) FROM stg.orders WHERE load_date = '2026-10-01';

-- 2. Re-run safety: no duplicates on the business key
SELECT order_id, COUNT(*) FROM stg.orders
GROUP BY order_id HAVING COUNT(*) > 1;

-- 3. Watermark moved forward after an incremental load
SELECT table_name, last_loaded_ts FROM ctl.watermark WHERE table_name = 'orders';

Record the pipeline run ID with every test result so defects can be traced to a specific run.

ETL Testing in Databricks

  • Bronze: file and record counts match the landed source files; schema as expected.
  • Silver: cleansing rules applied; duplicates removed; data types correct.
  • Gold: aggregates and business rules correct; reconcile totals with silver.

Delta Table Checks (Spark SQL and PySpark)

SQL
-- Spark SQL in a Databricks notebook
-- 1. Silver vs gold reconciliation
SELECT (SELECT SUM(amount) FROM silver.orders WHERE order_date = '2026-10-01')
     - (SELECT SUM(total_sales) FROM gold.daily_sales WHERE sales_date = '2026-10-01') AS diff;

-- 2. What changed in the last writes to a Delta table
DESCRIBE HISTORY gold.daily_sales;
Python
from pyspark.sql import functions as F

silver = spark.table("silver.orders")
# Mandatory columns not null
nulls = silver.filter(F.col("customer_id").isNull() | F.col("amount").isNull()).count()
assert nulls == 0, f"{nulls} rows with null mandatory fields"
# No duplicate order IDs after deduplication
dupes = silver.groupBy("order_id").count().filter("count > 1").count()
assert dupes == 0, f"{dupes} duplicate order_ids in silver"

Automating ADF and Databricks Tests

  • Keep validation queries in a Databricks notebook or Python test suite that runs after the pipeline (ADF can call a notebook activity at the end).
  • Write results to a test results table and fail the pipeline or alert on failures.
  • Use data quality frameworks such as Great Expectations for rule-based checks.
  • Run pipelines in a test environment with controlled input files before production.

Skills to Learn for Azure ETL Testing

  1. SQL and ETL testing fundamentals (most of the job).
  2. Data warehouse and medallion (bronze/silver/gold) concepts.
  3. Python and PySpark basics. See big data testing.
  4. ADF basics: pipelines, activities, triggers, monitoring.
  5. Databricks basics: notebooks, Delta tables, jobs.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you test an Azure Data Factory pipeline?

Run it in debug or test mode, check the run status and activity outputs such as rows read and copied, test parameters, incremental logic and error handling, then validate the target data with SQL.

How do you do ETL testing in Databricks?

Validate each layer: counts and schema in bronze, cleansing and deduplication in silver, and aggregates in gold, using Spark SQL or PySpark checks in notebooks or automated test jobs.

Is there a testing framework for Azure Data Factory?

Teams usually combine SQL or Python validation scripts with notebook or pipeline-based test runs, and data quality tools such as Great Expectations. Pipeline structure itself is tested through debug runs and parameterised test runs.

Do ETL testers need to know Azure?

It is increasingly asked for in India. SQL and ETL testing fundamentals come first; ADF and Databricks basics are a strong addition.

What is the medallion architecture?

A Databricks lakehouse pattern with bronze (raw), silver (cleaned) and gold (business-ready) layers. Testers validate data between each layer.
