ETL Tester: Role, Skills, Salary & How to Become One (2026)

An ETL tester (also called an ETL QA or data QA engineer) checks that data moved from source systems into a data warehouse is complete, correct and on time. There are no screens to click: the work is SQL, data rules and evidence. This guide explains what an ETL tester does, what an ETL test looks like, the skills and salary, and a practical plan to become one.

What Is an ETL Tester?

Companies pull data from many systems (sales, banking, CRM, apps) into a central data warehouse for reports and analytics. ETL tools Extract the data, Transform it and Load it. The ETL tester makes sure nothing went wrong on the way: no rows lost, no duplicates, every business rule applied correctly. New to the basics? Read what is ETL testing and how to do ETL testing first.

Job titles you will see: ETL Tester, ETL QA, ETL QA Engineer, Data Warehouse Tester, DWH Test Engineer, Data QA Analyst, Data Validation Engineer and BI Tester. They are mostly the same role. Full duties: ETL tester roles and responsibilities and ETL tester job description.

What Is an ETL Test?

An ETL test is a single check that compares what the data should be with what it is after a load. Example test case:

  • Rule: customer full_name = first_name + ‘ ’ + last_name, trimmed and in upper case.
  • Test: recalculate full_name from the source in SQL and compare it with the target column.
  • Expected: zero mismatching rows.
SELECT s.customer_id
FROM src.customers s
JOIN dwh.dim_customer t ON t.customer_id = s.customer_id
WHERE t.full_name <> UPPER(TRIM(s.first_name) || ' ' || TRIM(s.last_name));

An ETL QA suite is hundreds of tests like this: counts, duplicates, nulls, transformations, SCD history and report totals. See ETL test cases and types of ETL testing.

A Typical Day of an ETL Tester

  1. Check overnight load results and data quality alerts.
  2. Join the stand-up; pick up a story with a new mapping rule.
  3. Read the source-to-target mapping document and ask the developer about unclear rules.
  4. Write SQL test cases; run them after the developer’s load in the QA environment.
  5. Log defects with the query, expected vs actual and sample rows (defect examples).
  6. Add the checks to the regression suite or automation framework.

ETL Tester Career Path

ETL Tester → Senior ETL Tester / ETL Automation Engineer → Data QA Lead or Test Manager. Many testers also move into data engineering or analytics because they already know the data deeply (QA to data engineer, ETL tester vs ETL developer). Looking for openings? See ETL testing jobs & openings.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an ETL tester?

An ETL tester is a QA professional who checks data pipelines. They verify with SQL that data extracted from source systems, transformed and loaded into a data warehouse is complete, accurate and free of duplicates before it reaches reports.

What does an ETL tester do?

An ETL tester validates data moved from source systems into a data warehouse. They write SQL tests for counts, duplicates, nulls and transformation rules, log defects and maintain regression or automation suites.

What is ETL QA?

ETL QA is quality assurance for ETL pipelines and data warehouses. An ETL QA engineer is the same role as an ETL tester.

What is an ETL test?

An ETL test is a check that compares expected data with loaded data, for example a SQL query that recalculates a transformation from the source and returns any rows that do not match the target.

Can a fresher become an ETL tester?

Yes. Freshers with good SQL, data warehouse basics and one project they can explain do get ETL tester roles, especially at IT services companies.

What is the salary of an ETL tester in India?

Glassdoor India data from October 2026 shows an average of about ₹5.5 LPA, with most ETL testers between about ₹4.3 and ₹7.7 LPA. Freshers typically start around ₹3–4 LPA.

Is ETL tester a good job?

Yes. Every company with a data warehouse or analytics team needs people who can prove the data is right, and testers who add automation and cloud skills grow fastest.
