A technique is how you test; a type is what you test (see types of ETL testing). These are the ETL testing techniques testers use every day, with examples, followed by the methodologies teams use to organise the work.
Examples use one retail-orders load: source src_orders and src_customers, target fact_orders and dim_customer. You can download this exact data, with 8 planted defects, in the free ETL testing end-to-end project and run every query yourself.
10 ETL Testing Techniques
1. Set comparison (MINUS / EXCEPT)
SELECT order_id FROM src_orders WHERE status <> 'CANCELLED' EXCEPT SELECT order_id FROM fact_orders;
2. Anti-join (LEFT JOIN … IS NULL)
Same goal as MINUS, works in every database and returns extra columns for evidence.
3. Aggregate reconciliation
Compare COUNT, SUM and AVG between source and target, overall and per load date.
4. Rule recalculation
SELECT order_id FROM fact_orders WHERE ROUND(net_amount, 2) <> ROUND(quantity * unit_price - discount, 2);
5. Hash (checksum) comparison
Concatenate the columns of each row, hash them (MD5/SHA) and compare hashes instead of every column: fast on wide tables.
6. Sampling vs full comparison
Full comparison for keys and totals; random or stratified samples for expensive column-level checks on huge tables.
7. Data profiling
Nulls, distinct counts, ranges and patterns before and after the load. See data profiling.
8. Boundary and negative testing
Edge-case records: midnight timestamps, zero and negative amounts, unknown references, very long strings.
9. Metadata comparison
Compare column names, types and lengths against the design. See metadata testing.
10. Automated regression
Turn the stable checks into Python/pytest or tool-based tests that run after every load. See ETL testing using Python.
Which Technique When
| Situation | Best technique |
|---|---|
| Did every record arrive? | MINUS / anti-join + counts |
| Is a calculated column right? | Rule recalculation |
| Very wide or very large tables | Hash comparison + partition aggregates |
| New, unknown source | Profiling first |
| Same checks every day | Automated regression |
ETL Testing Methodologies
- Waterfall / V-model: test plan and cases from the mapping document, executed after development.
- Agile: testers review mappings in each sprint and test each table as it is built.
- Shift-left / test-driven data: data tests (for example dbt tests or Great Expectations) written with the pipeline code.
- Risk-based testing: deeper checks for tables that feed money, compliance or key reports.
The step-by-step life cycle is in ETL testing process.

Frequently Asked Questions
What are the ETL testing techniques?
Set comparison (MINUS/EXCEPT), anti-joins, aggregate reconciliation, rule recalculation, hash comparison, sampling, profiling, boundary testing, metadata comparison and automated regression.
What is the difference between ETL testing types and techniques?
Types describe what you test (for example transformation or performance testing); techniques describe how you test it (for example MINUS queries or hashing).
Which methodology is used for ETL testing?
Most teams now work in Agile sprints with risk-based priorities, and many add shift-left data tests written alongside the pipeline.
