Informatica PowerCenter, and its cloud successor Informatica Intelligent Data Management Cloud (IDMC), runs ETL at many banks, insurers, retailers and healthcare companies. That's why Informatica ETL testing shows up in so many job descriptions. The good news: you don't need to be an Informatica developer to test it. You need to understand what each mapping is supposed to do, and to prove it with SQL.

What Informatica ETL Testing Involves
Informatica moves data through mappings (the transformation logic), run by sessions (a mapping plus connections and settings), grouped into workflows (the job schedule). Testing means verifying each layer:
- Mapping logic — are the business rules right?
- Session behaviour — correct rows loaded, rejected rows handled, no silent errors?
- Workflow behaviour — right order, dependencies, restart and incremental logic?
- Data in the target — complete, accurate and consistent with the source?
What Testers Actually Touch in Informatica
| Component | What the tester uses it for |
|---|---|
| Designer / Mapping Designer | Read the mapping to understand the rules (read-only for testers) |
| Workflow Manager | See session settings: connections, filters, load type, reject handling |
| Workflow Monitor | Run workflows in test environments; check status and row counts |
| Session log | Source rows read, target rows inserted, updated, rejected; errors |
| Reject (bad) files | See which rows failed to load and why |
| Mapping specification | The source-to-target document your test cases come from |
In IDMC (Cloud Data Integration) the names differ — mappings, mapping tasks and taskflows — but the testing approach is the same.
The Informatica ETL Testing Process
- Read the mapping spec and list every rule: filters, lookups, derivations, defaults.
- Prepare test data in the source, including edge cases: NULLs, duplicates, invalid codes, late-arriving records.
- Run the workflow in the test environment and confirm it succeeded in Workflow Monitor.
- Check the session log: rows read vs rows written vs rows rejected.
- Validate the target with SQL: counts, source-minus-target, rule checks. See ETL testing SQL queries.
- Inspect reject files and confirm every rejected row should have been rejected.
- Re-run to test incremental loads and restart behaviour.
Test Cases by Transformation
| Transformation | What to test |
|---|---|
| Source Qualifier | SQL override and filter condition pull exactly the intended rows |
| Expression | Derived columns, string and date conversions, default values |
| Filter / Router | Each group gets the right rows; no rows dropped between groups |
| Lookup | Matched and unmatched keys, multiple matches, cache refresh |
| Joiner | Join type (normal, master/detail outer); unmatched rows |
| Aggregator | Group-by keys and totals match a SQL GROUP BY on the source |
| Update Strategy | Inserts vs updates vs deletes; SCD Type 1 and Type 2 behaviour |
| Sequence Generator | Surrogate keys are unique and don't reset between runs |
Example check for an Aggregator that totals daily sales per store:
SELECT s.store_id, s.sale_date, SUM(s.amount) AS expected, t.total_sales AS actual FROM src_sales s JOIN agg_daily_sales t ON t.store_id = s.store_id AND t.sale_date = s.sale_date GROUP BY s.store_id, s.sale_date, t.total_sales HAVING SUM(s.amount) <> t.total_sales;
Session and Workflow Checks
- Row reconciliation: source rows read = target rows written + rows rejected + rows filtered by design.
- Error threshold: does the session fail when it should, or silently continue?
- Incremental logic: mapping variables or parameters pick up only new or changed rows on the second run.
- Restart: after a failed run, a restart doesn't duplicate data.
- Dependencies: dimension loads finish before fact loads.
- Performance: run time stays within the load window — see ETL performance testing.
Automating Informatica Testing
Informatica has offered its own testing add-ons (such as Data Validation Option for PowerCenter) for source-to-target comparisons. Many teams instead use general tools that work with any ETL platform: QuerySurge, Datagaps ETL Validator, or a SQL + Python framework. Pick based on what your company already licenses. For the wider comparison see ETL testing tools.
How to Learn Informatica ETL Testing
Learn the testing foundations first — SQL, data warehouse concepts, SCDs and the standard ETL test types — then learn to read Informatica mappings. Testers who start with the tool and skip the foundations usually struggle in interviews.
Our course ETL Testing: From Beginners to Advanced covers those foundations: databases, data warehouse basics, dimension modelling, ETL testing concepts, Python and a real-time testing scenario. It doesn't teach Informatica itself, so follow it with Informatica training if your target jobs need it.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is Informatica ETL testing?
Informatica ETL testing is verifying that Informatica mappings, sessions and workflows move data from source to target correctly: every rule applied, no rows lost or duplicated, rejected rows handled and incremental loads working.
Do ETL testers need to know Informatica?
Not deeply. Testers need to read mappings and session logs and run workflows in test environments. Most of the actual validation is done with SQL against the source and target.
How do you test an Informatica mapping?
Read the mapping specification, prepare source test data with edge cases, run the workflow, check the session log and reject files, and then validate the target with SQL for counts, rules and data quality.
What tools are used for Informatica testing?
SQL is the main tool. For automation, teams use Informatica's own validation add-ons, QuerySurge, Datagaps ETL Validator, or custom SQL and Python frameworks.
Is Informatica PowerCenter still used?
Yes. Many enterprises still run PowerCenter, while new projects increasingly use Informatica's cloud platform, IDMC. The testing approach is the same on both.
